G.L. Freed studied architecture at Iowa State University prior to pursuing an academic career in the field of physics. He holds a Ph.D. from Florida Institute of Technology and retired in 2000 from the Florida state college system. His interest in watercolor painting developed during his architectural studies.
Because of his strong affinity for nature, he began bringing paper, brushes and paint on his outdoor explorations. This originated what would emerge as his becoming a plein air watercolorist, preferring to paint on location, and using the studio only for detail and refinement.
